Phoenix Amateur Operatic Society
Phoenix Amateur Operatic Society is one of the longest established societies in the Rotherham area and we are proud to have such a long history of successful shows under our belt, 62 productions to date.
Past Productions
Our First outing was in 1935 when our production of King of Sherwood was performed at the Assembly Rooms.
The following year gave us a change of venue, we moved to the Regent theatre, this time our performance was to be San Marino.
For the next three years we performed our interpretations of The Maid of The Mountains, Good Night Vienna and Gill Darling at the
Empire Theatre. Due to the outbreak of the second world war, Phoenix held no productions in the period 1940 - 1944.
On return to the boards of the Regent Theatre we went from strength to strength and as our membership grew our repertoire increased, leading to the production of such greats as:

1947 - The Belle of New York
1948 - Hit The Deck
1949 - Rainbow Inn
1950 - Sunny
1951 - The Maid of the Mountains
1952 - Magyar Melodies

1957 - Call Me Madam
We returned to the Assembly Rooms for a period of two years, 1958 - 1959, performing Variety Cocktail and Dick Whittington.
Our first performances at the Civic Theatre were Love From Judy in 1960, and Wedding in Paris in1961.
1962 - 1964 saw our society performing at the Essoldo Theatre, giving our first airings of
The King and I, Carousel, and Calamity Jane.
From 1965 to the present day all our productions have been staged at Rotherham Civic Theatre. Our society members have been able to demonstrate their talent and enthusiasm in the following shows:

As an adult society we do state that our members should be no younger than 14 years by the time of the first performance.
Rehearsals
Rehearsals are held on Wednesday evenings from September until the show. The rehearsal venue is: Brinsworth West Community Centre, off Bawtry Road, (opposite the Atlas Pub).
Membership fees are currently:
£12.50 per annum for works members
£10.00 per annum for Senior Citizens and Junior members
£15.00 per annum for non-works members
There is a nominal weekly fee of £1.oo to cover the cost of hiring the hall we use for rehearsals, but as this also includes provision of drinks and biscuits we feel that you'd have to go a long way to get the same value for money!
Meet Me In St Louis

Our 2002 production was Meet Me In St Louis, an enchanting tale of a young girl's love for the boy next door, set against the backdrop of the opening of the World Fair in 1903. Music and lyrics by Hugh Martin and Ralph Blanc. By arrangement with Musicscope and stage musicals Ltd of New York.
